This is a news exerpt from MSNBC...I put it here instead of the news site...because it is local info and I think everyone needs to be aware of the danger.

So far this year, the largest concentration of killer bees in the United States has been in Abilene, Texas.

That's where Barbara King and her son Billy were attacked earlier this year by the bees that were nesting inside their barbecue grill.

"I just thought I was gonna die," Barbara said.

"I couldn’t do nothing," said Billy. "Every time I'd run toward my Mom trying to get the bees off her, they would attack me."

In Abilene, commercial beekeeper Mel Williams expects 30 to 40 killer bee calls a week during the "swarming season," which runs until early July.

"When they go on the attack," Williams said, "they come in hundreds. They cover you up, they go for your mouth, up your nose." -MSNBC

I don't remember my husband saying that Mally. His mothers name is Alma not Barbara. :o

There are several bees in the Comanche area also. I hear about it on the station I listen to.

There has been several around here in the last few weeks. Swarms or Bees ?? Bees always swarm when a new queen is hatched out and that is in the spring or summer ...

right before dark...out at my mom and dads place...you can hear a hum...like thousands of bees all making one sound. I have wondered a couple of times if they have a swarm there out in the woods.

Yes Pond...bees are bees. And yes they can all be dangerous...and they all swarm....but Texas Honey bees are not as aggressive as those that have been Africanized.

When I was pregnant with my 8 year old, we fired up the chain saw and I was running and jumping electric fence (7 months pregnant) before I knew what had hit me. Talk about instinct !!!!! The bees were black and white and very fat ... HUGE!

I got nailed about 4 times on my head, several times on my arms and shoulders ... and I felt like I was on stinkin' FIRE !!!!!!!!!

I never want to experience that again ... I did not have any kind of allergice reaction, thank goodness !!

At one time we had a hundred Bee hives . We stopped having bees when everyone thought all bees were going to attack them ... there is no such thing as Texas Honey bees ... they only live here ...

Those bees live in the ground and attack the same as Honey bees when they are bothered ...bumble bees

I used that to differenciate between those that have been here for decades and decades vs. the Africanized Bees that have moved up here from Brazil.

Sorry for not being more specific. I should have used the term European honey bees.

here are a couple of good sites

One interesting thing about Africanized Bees...they swarm more often than domisticated bees. both warm and cold weather can trigger a swarm.

I have to tell a story here ! There was a lady that lived down the street and she was a nut . One day she called us telling us to come get our bees . We thought there was swarm and we would get it out of her way . We went down to her house and she lead us to her Hummingbird feeder and there was 3 or 4 bees flying around and she wanted us to get them .. we just told her to spray them with hotshot or something ... everyone thought every Bee in town was ours...

I saw a documentary on honey making not long ago and it was sooooo interesting! We don`t have any bee hives any more ..

Bees are vital for pollination for our crops ...
It isn`t silly but the bees make honey ... You just set the hives up and then get bees . we use to order them and put them in the hives .
We have land so they were not all in town ...
We have suits to wear when working with bees ...

Well, yeah, I know that the bees are the ones that make the honey, but they don't get it to the consumer ... that's the part I meant ... do you work bees for honey, lol ....

Very interesting!

My inlaws in Killeen had a hive of Africanized bees in their walls...had to have a specialist in bee keeping come clean them out. They had the same thing...a humming all the time.

ekk...just the thought gives me chills.

I have never liked bees (I am allergic)...my Grandfather on my dad's side used to keep bees. And in the summer, when I was a baby...they would come into the swamp coolers for water and get blown in the house. Daddy would come home and me and mom would be locked up in the bathroom with all the swamp coolers turned off...hot as all get out. Momma wasn't just hot from the heat either...she would be hopping mad. She finally talked Daddy into making his father move the hives.
