I'm one of 34 in an office pool and I bought 3 of my own. Unfortunately, when the lady from our office went to buy the tickets, she told the clerk, "34, Cash Option". The first one came out as "cash option" and the next 33 came out as "25 payments". Yuck!!! It works out to just under $85,000 a year for all of us, based on 40% in taxes. The guy who is about to move back to Brazil isn't too happy so I told him that it gives him 25 reasons to come back to visit us! LOL Not that all of us would still be working for our company. LOL Some of the participants make so much that they couldn't quit but I would!!

If our cash option wins, we've all got $1,058,823.53 based on 40% in taxes. If I win, or anyone else who bought one at cash option, the payout would be $36M. Again, based on 40% in taxes. I'm taking this too seriously, aren't I? LOL

This only proves to me that with this new method of doing the lottery (some kind of powerball thing, right?) that the odds of winning have increased tremendously, and yeah, some lucky chump will win, but I think it's giving high hopes in people like me, rofl ...

Dont buy lotto tickets , give me the dollar , pull my arm , my eyes will light up and I will give you back .50 everytime. Lets face it the lotto is a way for the government to steal more of your hard earned dollars, the lotto is a tax that appeals to our sence of greed. I am afraid that I understand the laws of probibility to well to be sucked into that trap. If gambling is good then why is it against the law for everyone but the government. It is little more than state endorced robbery of those who didnt pay attention in math class.

Pond
06-17-2004, 10:44 PM
I look at it as a donation .. you know it is going to help the Texas`schools ... it is ever how you want to look at it .. It is a sin if it takes food from your mouths to buy a ticket But one ticket here and there doesn`t hurt a thing ... Do you think God is going to stop you at the gate and say " Nope you can`t enter " you bought a lottery ticket ... It is not one of those things that is going to keep you out of Gods` eye .
My 2 cents

BigGunz
06-17-2004, 11:09 PM
I agree with Pond on this one!..excessive gambling to the point that it takes food and other essentials away from your family thats a sin for sure!

NEWSCHANNEL 9

Who Won The Lotto?
NewsChannel Nine was the first to report that it looks as if someone came forward to claim the $145-million dollar Texas Lotto jackpot.

Denise LaFrance
Monday, June 21, 2004 -- The Texas Lottery Commission say someone went to their offices in East El Paso Monday and appeared to have the winning ticket. But in order to officially take home the prize, that person must go to lottery headquarters in Austin. There are reports of the winner being from Juarez, but that is unconfirmed.

Whoever the winner is, he or she will still get the same amount of money. According to the Texas Lottery Commission, he or she will walk away with at least 82-point five million dollars. Do El Pasoans think it's fair the winner could possibly be from Mexico?

"If it's a person from Juarez, it's good for them," says El Pasoan Rene Lastro. He says "to each his own" and sees nothing wrong with El Paso's lucky lotto winner being from Mexico. Rene says his dad would buy lottery tickets from Mexico all the time.

But Texas Lottery officials say before anyone can take home the 82.5 million, they have to pay a percentage of it to the Federal Government. For U.S. residents that's 25-percent and Non-U.S. residents, it's 30-percent.

Lottery officials also say the winner of Saturday's jackpot chose to take all their winnings up front versus 25-years in payments. Rene says it would be nice to see some of that money put back into the country, "if they most likely they move to El Paso or the United State with that amount of money."

I found a listing of all the lottery winners through March of this year.

I only noticed two unclaimed tickets.

There were 11 pages of winners since 1992.

Why are so many taxes taken out if the lottery winnings? I think it's false advertising. They promoted the pot being 145 million, yet after taxes with the cash value option, the winner only gets 54 million.

i don't have a problem with this...they bought the ticket. The money they spent was just as valid regardless of where they live.

I agree that it's a longshot to win but I know of at least 2 people (both from Ranger) who probably did not understand the probabilities of winning but nonetheless, hit the numbers. I understand your point completely and I rarely play but I have no problem throwing some money that way because who knows, I could also hit the numbers. It adds a little more excitement to my life and I never throw so much money away that it hurts. Unfortunately, there are those who spend money on it and can't afford what they spend. Now that's just wrong!!!!

By the way, I lost $3 bucks playing bowling poker tonight knowing full well that by playing, I would probably lose. It was fun and I was in the lead on one game until the pres of our division pulled out 2 pair. Dang it!!!! I knew my chances going in and played only because I knew that I would live if I lost my money. Too bad there are those who play the lottery with money they truly need.

I think it really bites that by choosing the "cash option", the payout immediately drops by 50%. Doesn't seem right to me at all. But what am I griping about? It's FOUND money and I'll take it!!! LOL
